How to Record Douyu Streams (2026)
If you read our Huya guide, you already know half the story of Chinese gaming streaming. Douyu is the other half. The two platforms have been locked in a rivalry for years, both backed by Tencent, both focused on gaming and esports, both operating as the Chinese answer to Twitch after Twitch got blocked in China in 2018.
I got into Douyu content through a specific niche: the platform has a strong community around fighting games and older competitive titles that don't get as much coverage on Western platforms. Watching high-level Chinese players in games that are past their Western peak but still thriving in China was eye-opening. The problem, as always with Chinese platforms, was keeping any of it.
What Douyu Is
Douyu (斗鱼) is a Chinese live streaming platform focused on gaming and esports, headquartered in Wuhan and founded in 2013. Like Huya, it's backed by Tencent, which holds roughly a 37% stake. Douyu is publicly traded on NASDAQ under ticker DOYU.
At its 2019 peak, Douyu had over 160 million monthly active users, actually more than Twitch at the time. The platform has contracted since. As of Q2 2025, Douyu reported 36.4 million mobile monthly active users, down 11.4% year over year, with 2.8 million paying users. Revenue was RMB 1,053.9 million (about $147 million) for the quarter.
The business has been through a rough stretch but showed signs of turnaround in 2025, posting net income of RMB 37.8 million in Q2 2025 compared to a net loss the year before. Notably, Douyu's non-livestreaming "innovative business" segment grew 96.8% year over year and now represents 45.2% of total revenue, as the company works to diversify beyond gifting-based livestreaming revenue.
Douyu's content is game-centric: League of Legends, Honor of Kings, PUBG, fighting games, and esports tournaments. The platform uses a danmaku-style comment system (comments that scroll across the video), which is a distinctive feature of Chinese streaming platforms shared with Bilibili.
Douyu's Recording and Download Situation
The now-familiar pattern for Chinese platforms. No viewer download button. Chinese-language interface. Account registration requires Chinese verification. Replays exist for some content at the streamer's discretion, with no clear retention policy.
Douyu has also been tightening its content moderation. In December 2025, as part of a Chinese regulatory campaign called the "Clear and Bright Special Action to Rectify Chaos in Online Live Streaming Rewards," Douyu refined its review standards and tightened management measures. This kind of regulatory pressure means content can be removed or restricted with little notice, which makes preserving broadcasts through recording even more valuable.
For international viewers, the access barriers are identical to Huya, Douyin, and Bilibili: language, geography, and no download tools.
Method 1: Cloud Recording
StreamRecorder.io supports Douyu as one of its platforms. Add the streamer's Douyu room URL, and the service monitors the channel, recording automatically whenever the streamer goes live. Recording happens on remote servers regardless of your location, so no Chinese account, no VPN, no language navigation required for the recording itself.
The scheduling reality for Douyu is the same as Huya. Chinese gaming content airs during Chinese evenings (CST, UTC+8), which is inconvenient for Western viewers. Esports tournaments have predictable schedules, but individual streamer broadcasts are unpredictable. Cloud recording captures everything automatically.
Free tier covers 720p with up to three channels. Paid plans go up to 4K. For fast-motion gaming content, the higher quality tiers reduce compression artifacts during rapid action.
Method 2: Desktop Recording with OBS
Douyu's web player works at douyu.com in international browsers, though geo-restrictions and login requirements apply to some content. If you can get a stream playing in a browser, OBS Studio captures the window with full quality control.
The bitrate control OBS offers is valuable for gaming content where compression artifacts show up during fast movement. But the timing constraint means OBS only works when you're available to run it during the broadcast, which for CST evening content is the middle of the night in most Western time zones.
Method 3: Open-Source Tools (Streamlink)
Streamlink and similar open-source command-line tools have plugins that support Douyu. These can capture Douyu streams via the command line, giving technical users granular control over the recording.
The tradeoffs are the same as with any command-line tool. You need to be comfortable with the terminal, deal with authentication, and troubleshoot when Douyu changes their backend and breaks the plugin. Viable for developers and researchers, impractical for casual viewers.
Douyu vs Huya: The Recording Perspective
If you're recording Chinese gaming content, you'll likely deal with both platforms. Here's the practical comparison.
Huya is larger (83.4M MAU vs Douyu's 36.4M) and more profitable, with stronger esports partnerships. Douyu is smaller and has been contracting, but it maintains a loyal community around specific game genres and has been diversifying its revenue base.
From a recording standpoint, both platforms are functionally identical in their challenges: Chinese interface, no downloads, danmaku comments, short replay windows, and regulatory pressure that can pull content without notice. StreamRecorder.io supports both. If you follow Chinese esports or gaming creators, you'll want recording set up for both Huya and Douyu since top creators sometimes stream on both or switch platforms.

Tips for Recording Douyu
Room URLs are the key. Douyu organizes streams by room. Find the streamer's room URL (format: douyu.com/[room_id]) and paste it into StreamRecorder.io. You don't need to read the Chinese interface.
Regulatory removals happen fast. Given the December 2025 tightening and ongoing regulatory campaigns, Douyu content can be restricted or removed with little warning. If a broadcast matters to you, having cloud recording active means you capture it before any potential removal.
Danmaku comments are part of the experience. The scrolling comments are integral to Chinese streaming culture. A recording captures the video as delivered, though the danmaku overlay behavior depends on how the stream is encoded.
Bottom Line
Douyu is the number two player in Chinese gaming streaming, smaller than Huya but with a dedicated community and a genuine claim to being one of the two platforms that define the space. The content is high quality, especially for gaming genres that get less attention in the West. And like every Chinese platform, it's locked behind language, geography, and a total absence of download tools, with the added wrinkle of regulatory pressure that can remove content quickly.
Cloud recording is the practical way to preserve Douyu broadcasts. If you follow Chinese gaming content, Douyu belongs in your recording setup alongside Huya.
