This Public Defender Became TikTok Famous by Explaining the Legal System - And Now His Followers Think He's Their Lawyer

When most people think of viral TikTok content, dancing trends and comedy skits probably come to mind. But one creator has built a massive following by doing something completely different: explaining the legal system. Alex Peter, known as @loloverruled, has turned his day job as a public defender into compelling social media content, amassing nearly a million followers who hang on his every legal explanation.

What sets Peter apart isn't just his profession—it's how he makes complex legal concepts accessible to everyday people. His videos often feature him breaking down real cases, explaining constitutional rights, and offering insights into how the criminal justice system actually works. He started posting in June 2020, with his first video discussing social organization and protests, setting the tone for the educational yet engaging content that would follow. His approach strikes a perfect balance between informative and entertaining, earning him over 61 million likes across his videos.

However, Peter's success has created an unexpected problem. Viewers have become so invested in his content that many treat him as their personal attorney, sending him confessions and legal questions through comments and tagged videos. In multiple posts, he's had to firmly remind followers that he is not their defense attorney and cannot provide individual legal advice. This confusion has become serious enough that Peter has expressed genuine concern about potential professional complications arising from these interactions.

Peter's credentials back up his viral fame. A Columbia Law School graduate, he has worked with prestigious organizations including Paul Hastings and even Google before focusing on public defense work. His experience spans from The Legal Aid Society in New York to his current role at the Neighborhood Association for Inter-Cultural Affairs. This diverse background gives him unique perspectives on both high-profile corporate cases and the day-to-day realities of defending clients who can't afford private attorneys.

The 34-year-old has faced some career turbulence recently, apparently losing a position in August 2024, but his influence extends beyond TikTok. He's been featured in discussions with popular political commentator HasanAbi, runs a Substack newsletter called "Vanishing Points," and has become something of a cultural phenomenon—a real-life legal expert who makes the law understandable for millions. His content continues to fill a crucial gap in public legal education, though he's learned to be very clear about the boundaries of that role.
